Event: collective preseason testing
Series: FIA Formula E
Location: Donington Park, UK
Date: 23-25 August 2016
The third season of the all-electric racing series Formula E will race into action on 9 October around the streets of downtown Hong Kong. Prior to the season, all 10 teams have a limited amount of preseason testing they may undertake, to help them bed in new powertrains, systems, procedures and staff.
Of the 10 teams, nine are constructor entities. These have built their own powertrains and have had just 15 days of private track testing to develop their technology over the summer; these test sessions have been run behind closed doors at various bases around the world. These six days of collective preseason testing at the UK’s Donington Park, split into two three-day segments, comprise the only time that the teams have to measure themselves against each other before racing gets underway.
It was also the first time we’d seen the new Jaguar Racing team on track. The first day was open only to media and teams, while the public was welcomed in to watch procedings for the latter two days.
For the first three day session, Spacesuit was commissioned by a number of clients for a variety of material. DS Virgin Racing, Mahindra Racing, NextEV NIO and Venturi needed a variety of artistic and documentary shots, to show off their new creations in the best possible light for marketing material and social media use while chronicling the test days. Renault engaged us for a set of neutral-background studio shots of both drivers and their helmets, which will be used in numerous applications including advertising on trains and as part of the design for the race garage internal walls. Little Dot Studios, which makes the social media videos for Formula E, requested the use of our imagery to use alongside a video prepared to show off the new technology in the paddock, while Michelin used our shots to show off their rubber working in the wet and dry conditions. Technology giant and Venturi sponsor ZF purchased some imagery for use in a 2017 calendar to be given to clients and partners.
