Event: Long Beach race weekend
Series: FIA Formula E
Location: Long Beach, USA
Date: 2 April 2016
The Spacesuit team was kept very busy in California for Formula E’s second visit to Long Beach. Shiv, Dan and Marta had a full schedule of events, beginning on Tuesday morning with a shoot for Virgin Produced and DS Virgin Racing and running all the way through to Formula E’s swanky gala dinner on Saturday night.
At every Formula E event, we follow a three-day itinerary of shooting. We call Thursday “build day”, which is when the cars are assembled and the last sections of the temporary street circuits are completed. We use the day to capture the sorts of shots that keep our inner geeks happy: spanners, tyres, brake discs, wiring looms, bottles of coolant, forklift trucks, oily fingers.
Friday is “driver day” for us. We shoot the track walk in the morning, driver briefings and press conferences, media pen sessions, and then the afternoon’s shakedown session. Friday is usually the day that the teams for whom we work request team photos, private shots of new sponsors or gear, and hero shots of their drivers in race kit for promotional material. Friday night doesn’t hold out much chance of a rest, as corporate events beckon, with our team in strong demand by clients such as the Intercontinental Hotel Group.
Saturday is race day in Formula E and it’s jam-packed. Two free practice sessions, qualifying groups, a “super pole” shoot-out and the 50 minute race are squeezed into the day. As well as the track action, we supply Formula E will off-track atmosphere shots including the eVillage fan zone and the eMotion VIP club. We also capture autograph sessions, the media pen, press conferences and podium celebrations. After the podium, we like to catch the winning drivers for intimate portraits with their hard-won shiny metal.
It’s not just about content, however: delivery is crucial. On Thursday and Friday, we aim to supply clients with photography by 5pm. On Saturday, we send through shots after every track session, which provides ample material for social media needs.
Here’s a taste of the mass of content captured by Spacesuit snappers over the Long Beach 2016 Formula E weekend.
